Delta seizes #1, #7 Fresno hits milestone in this week's State Women's Volleyball Top 25
An epic SoCal match won by Long Beach City over San Diego Mesa has caused a ripple effect at the top of this week's CCCWVCA State Top 25 Rankings. San Joaquin Delta takes over as the new #1-ranked team with American River moving up to #2 while LBCC at #3 is the new top squad in Southern California.
SD Mesa's 17-match win streak dating back to last year is stopped in five sets as the Olympians slip to #4.
Rounding out the top 10 are #5 Sierra, #6 Feather River, #7 Fresno City, #8 Grossmont, #9 Moorpark and #10 Orange Coast.
The undefeated is down to just two teams in Long Beach and #14 LA Mission.
Fresno head coach Kieran Roblee (and her loyal assistant coaching staff over the years) hit a milestone in becoming the winningest coach in the Rams volleyball 49-year history with victory #206 in just her eighth season.
- SAN JOAQUIN DELTA, Big 8, 13-1: The Mustangs swept Diablo Valley to open Big 8 conference play and have won four straight. Mia Alomia scored eight kills in just 11 swings (.636) in the DVC match. - AMERICAN RIVER, Big 8, 12-1: The Beavers scored conference-opening sweeps over Diablo Valley and Folsom Lake to extend its streak to five consecutive. It will be 1 v. 2 when they play Delta on Sept. 25 as SJD is responsible for American River's only loss on Sept. 7. ARC climbs a slot. NorCal #2; Last Week's State Rank: #3
- LONG BEACH CITY, South Coast South, 9-0: The Vikings stay undefeated by sweeping Mt. San Jacinto then sending shockwaves through the South by getting past Mesa in five (16-14). LBCC led 2-0, SDM rallied to win next two sets and held a 13-11 lead in the fifth, but the Vikings pulled off the huge victory. Enaya Vaielua was a State Player of the Week #5 while Kaylani Moncada had 21 digs in the Mesa triumph. LBCC soars four spots up as region's new leader. SoCal #1; Last Week's State Rank: #7
- SAN DIEGO MESA, Pacific Coast Athletic, 9-1: The Olympians completed a dominating sweep over Grossmont in a PCAC tilt (75-42), then suffered their first loss of 2024 in the 5-set thriller defeat v. - SIERRA, Big 8, Big 8, 13-3: The Wolverines started conference play with sweeps over Modesto and Santa Rosa. Jordyn Deter leads all state setters in assists per set at 11.05. Sierra falls a slot. NorCal: #3; Last Week's State Rank: #4
- FEATHER RIVER, Golden Valley, 15-4: The Golden Eagles are on an 11-match win streak, picking up 4-set wins over Hartnell and Los Medanos and sweeping Sequoias. Ani Tuinauvai made a double-double (10 kills, 10 digs) in the COS victory. Despite the recent success, FRC settles for a 1-spot drop. NorCal #4; Last Week's State Rank: #5
- FRESNO CITY, Central Valley, 10-4: The Rams opened CVC play over Reedley and Merced and extend one of the longest win streaks of any kind in any sport at 178 straight wins in conference matches. - GROSSMONT, Pacific Coast Athletic, 9-5: The Griffins had their 37-match win streak going back to 2021 in PCAC play stopped in the 3-set defeat v. Mesa. They rebounded with a sweep over Southwestern. Eyleen Sanchez ripped eight kills (.538), served six aces and passed at 2.4 in the team's win over SWC. SoCal #3; Last Week's State Rank: #8
- MOORPARK, Western State North, 9-2: The Raiders have won five straight, including a sweep over MiraCosta and a 4-set triumph over Canyons. Prior Borick posted 34 digs and eight aces in the two wins. SoCal #4; Last Week's State Rank: #9

- SANTA BARBARA CITY, Western State North, 8-2: The Vaqueros got past Pasadena in four. Kaylin Cooney pounded 15 kills (hit .429) and made six blocks. SBCC rises a step up. SoCal #9; Last Week's State Rank: #17

- SHASTA, Golden Valley, 13-4: The Knights have won five consecutive and nine of their last 10 matches. Last week, they defeated Cabrillo in four and swept San Jose. - SANTA ROSA, Big 8, 9-6: The Bear Cubs beat Cosumnes River in four, then were swept by Sierra. SRJC has wins over Shasta (1-2 v. Knights) and Hartnell. - SANTA MONICA, Western State South, 6-5: The Corsairs lost to Orange Coast in four, then had a wild 5-set win over Ventura (15-12) that saw the Pirates win the third and fourth sets by high scores, 35-33 and 27-25. - PASADENA CITY, South Coast North, 5-8: The Lancers lost to Santa Barbara in four sets (100-93 in points), but despite a grueling schedule v. top teams, Pasadena's two wins in the last 10 matches have caught up to them rankings-wise.
