State kills leader/Desert's Clairie Thomas paces CCCWVCA Players of Week #10
College of the Desert outside hitter Clairie Thomas, Feather River setter Teya Gibbs and San Diego Mesa OH Mia Lundberg were chosen as the CCCWVCA State Players of the Week #10.
Thomas, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from La Quinta High, leads the state in kills per set (5.07), overall kills (375), is attacking at a consistent .260 percentage, and has done that as the first player in California this season to eclipse the 1,000 attempt mark.
Thomas, who has recorded double figures (12 or more too) in kills in all 21 of the Roadrunners matches, totaled 33 last week in Inland Empire Athletic Conference sweeps over San Bernardino Valley and Cerro Coso. She hit .357 with 19 kills and two aces v. SBVC and delivered 14 kills, 16 digs, two aces, three blocks (two solos) against Cerro Coso.
Gibbs, a 5-8 sophomore out of Chico High, is another in a long line of great Feather River setters. On Saturday, she helped the state #1-ranked Golden Eagles beat NCAA Division III UC Santa Cruz in four sets by dishing out 43 assists and defending 22 digs.
In three matches, she totaled 104 assists, 47 digs, and four kills and three aces. Gibbs is fifth in the state in helpers per state at 10.22 per set. She is the fourth selection for a FRC player as POTW this season.
Lundberg, a 5-11 redshirt freshman who attended Mission College Preparatory Catholic High in San Luis Obispo and from Templeton, hit .415 with 28 kills, 21 digs, four blocks and two aces in a pair of Mesa victories. In a key match v. Palomar, she recorded a double-double on 17 kills and 15 digs. She has helped the #2-ranked Olympians to a current 19-match win streak.
