DeJesus, Whitmer Earn Player, Pitcher of the Week Honor
LOS ANGELES — First-year shortstop Andrea DeJesus of No. 3 West Valley College and sophomore pitcher Angela Whitmer of No. 19 Orange Coast College have earned the California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association (3CFCA) Players of the Week honors.
DeJesus is awarded her first conference recognition just two weeks into her collegiate career, after leading the Vikings to three wins with clutch at-bats including her first career homer. The first-year shortstop ignited an 8-0 six-inning run-rule win over San Joaquin Delta College with a two-run inside-the-park home run.
Three days later, DeJesus lined a two-run double and an RBI single in separate games of a doubleheader against Santa Rosa (W, 3-2) and College of the Sequoias (W, 3-0), respectively. She finished the week going 4-8 with a memorable first college round tripper, a double, five RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base.
Coming off a stellar complete-game shutout in the Pirates' home opener, Whitmer led OCC past the #1 Mt. SAC Mounties on the road with another gutsy complete-game shutout (2-0). It is also Whitmer's first career 3CFCA recognition.
Whitmer twirled seven innings allowing just five hits while striking out three against the state's best squad early on. Since the opening day loss to Long Beach, the sophomore right-hander has delivered 14 innings of shutout ball with nine strikeouts.
