AZUSA - Victory had eluded them for the first five games of the season, finally the sweet taste of a win came in quite a convincing fashion. The Los Angeles City College men's soccer team got their first win after 12 years, and it happened on the road as the cubs routed Citrus College Owls five goals to two.
Offensive midfielder Ryan "little Modric" Medina was on fire Tuesday evening by scoring one goal and assisting in three more. Medina is the smallest player of the team but the skillful playmaker is a giant on the pitch, commanding the midfield and creating chances for an offense that lacked real firepower during their first four matches.
The match started in the worst way possible for the cubs in the very first minute when an error by goalie Luis Villegas in controlling the ball found a Citrus College forward. The ball was cleared at the goal line by defender Oscar Garcia but the ball hit teammate Juan Felix for the opening goal. The Cubs reacted immediately and thirty seconds later Ryan Medina equalized for the cubs with a shot from close range.
In the 11th minute Medina stole a ball just outside the penalty box and assisted Fernando Gonzalez for his first goal on his season debut. Citrus College would tie the score through a penalty five minutes before halftime. In the second half LACC came out hungry to win and a shot by Medina was blocked by the keeper but the rebound fell to Felipe Alvarez to give the visitors the lead.
In the 81st minute, Ryan once again stole the ball in the box and served forward Ivan Castrejon, who calmly netted the fourth goal of the match with a shot to the near post. Five minutes later, Castrejon won a ball after a long clearance by goalkeeper Villegas, dribbled off to the right side and sent a perfect cross that was headed in by Oscar Garcia for the fifth and final goal.
This win meant so much for everyone on the team as they have been working hard for moments like these since training began in April. A historic win for a young program that now sets their sights on their next home game against LA Mission on Friday.
