Southern California Football Association names Chuck Lyon new commissioner
The Southern California Football Association (SCFA) has announced the selection of longtime former coach and athletics administrator Chuck Lyon as its new commissioner.
"I am honored to introduce myself as the new commissioner of the Southern California Football Association," said Lyon. "It is a privilege to rejoin an organization with such a rich tradition of athletic competition and academic commitment.
"With a deep passion for student-athlete development and a strong belief in teamwork, I look forward to working collaboratively with administrators, athletic directors, and coaches to continue the legacy of the SCFA. I am excited about the road ahead and committed to supporting and strengthening community college football in Southern California."
Lyon brings over 20 years of experience at the California community college level to the position. From 1998-2006, Lyon was head coach of the College of the Canyons football team. He guided the Cougars to a 2004 national and state championship with a perfect 14-0 record.
His squads won six straight conference championships (2000-05) and appeared in eight bowl games with Lyons at the helm. He concluded his Canyons' coaching career with an impressive 85-20 overall record.
Lyon held the position of athletic director at Canyons from 2007 until 2016 before taking on a bigger role as Dean of Physical Education, Kinesiology, Athletics & Athletic Director in 2017. While athletic director, Lyon served numerous terms as a member of the SCFA Executive Committee and Competition Committee.
Lyon stepped away from the college in 2021 but recently returned to Canyons as a men's golf coach while also coaching the women's golf team at Moorpark College this past fall and spring seasons (2024-25). He helped lead the COC men to a state championship while the Moorpark women finished fifth at the state finals.
Lyon holds a bachelor's degree in physical education from California State University, Northridge and a master's degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific University.
He replaces Jim Sartoris, who stepped down from the position earlier this summer. Sartoris had served as the SCFA's commissioner since its inception in 2008.
