Grossmont beats No. 1 Riverside City
Griffins freshman quarterback throws for 237 yards and three touchdowns
Grossmont College manufactured the biggest surprise by a San Diego community college football team since the Griffins captured the state title in 2005.
Host Grossmont stunned Riverside City College — the No. 1-ranked team in the state — 38-28 on Saturday at Mashin-Roth Stadium.
"I don't know if I'd say this is the biggest win we've ever had," Griffins coach Mike Jordan said. "Honestly, though, it was definitely one of the biggest big wins."
The Griffins (2-1) displayed their youth in the season opener when they lost 33-6 to Southwestern College.
"Coming into the season we only had two players that had taken a college snap on offense," Jordan said. "But you've got to give these kids credit. They've really matured fast. I knew three weeks ago this game was going to be a challenge."
But the Griffins were up to it, forging a 35-14 halftime lead.
Freshman quarterback Michael Carrillo completed 16 of 33 for 237 yards and three touchdowns to spark Grossmont. Running back Thomas McDonald produced 169 all-purpose yards and one TD.
Valhalla grad De'Shawn Tone racked up three tackles (two for losses) a fumble recovery and a sack.
"It was crazy in the locker room after we won because we had a lot more believers," Tone said. "Before we played, I figured afterward I'd go home, go to sleep, do my homework and eat. But the game was so exhilarating there's no way I could sleep."
Palomar 33, Mesa 6: Palomar sophomore Damon Nolan generated 236 yards and one touchdown, while quarterback Mitch Bartram fired three TD strikes for the visiting Comets.
Bartram completed 15 of 26 for 204 yards. Nolan was not surprised that the Comets (2-1) bounced back after being bullied by Long Beach City a week ago.
"We knew we had to be ready," Nolan said. "We had a great passing game."
Mesa fell to 1-2.
Southwestern 41, L.A. Pierce 14: The Jaguars remained unbeaten at 3-0.
