CSM'S STATE-LEADING DEFENSE SETS RUSHING RECORD; STOPS LANEY, 30-20, IN BULLDOG BOWL
The state No. 7 ranked Bulldogs (9-2) set a school record, holding No. 18 Laney (6-5) to minus 45 yards rushing, and recorded ten sacks -- led by game MVP Mosa Likio. The 5-11, 230-pound sophomore linebacker (out of Wilcox High, Santa Clara) had ten tackles, including two sacks, as the Bulldogs held Laney to 121 net yards and lowered their state-leading defense total to 237.2 yards per game. Previous CSM rushing defensive mark was the minus 43 yards the Bulldog held Foothill on Nov. 1.
"Our offense needed a little wake-up call," said CSM coach Bret Pollack. "They heard some words at halftime. I'm proud of the way our offense turned it around."
NORCAL RECEIVING PACESETTER KUTCHERA SHINES: CSM took control, however, during a 13-second span in the third period when wide receiver Kevin Kutchera caught two TD passes (ten and 35 yards) from Justin Burgess. Mister Marshall-Cotton forced Laney's Gordon to fumble the kickoff return after CSM's first score and Keith Marcus recovered to set-up Kutchera for another TD on the next play.
Kutchera, the offensive player of the game, had five receptions for 83 yards to finish the season with 43 catches for 841 yards and a 19.6 average per catch (leading all Northern California National Division players and ranking fourth overall in the state).
CSM planned to run out the clock after that and, in the process, received the clinching points on a 15-yard scoring run by Durrell Crooks with 1:06 left. A pair of sacks by linebacker Willie Mays quieted the Eagles in the final minute.
