5CTCA announces Runners of the Week for 10th week of 2024 campaign
November 5, 2024
SALINAS - Conference Championship season kicked off with several meets in the South that produced some outstanding individual performances heading into the SoCal Championship on Friday, Nov. 8
At the Western State Conference Championship hosted by Oxnard College, Madeline Fletcher of Cuesta College pulled off one of the season's biggest upsets in taking the overall victory. Fletcher, who had run just 20:42 on the same course back in early September, finished in front of three previous ROTW recipients. Her time of 18:09 was 2:32 faster. Fletcher was the 2021 WSC 400-meter champion in 59.44 and is clearly showing the ability to excel at cross country now.
Joseph Chavarria of Chaffey College placed second overall at the Inland Empire Athletic Conference Championship. Chavarria improved from sixth as a freshman to runner-up, giving last week's ROTW Kevin Nava of SBVCC all he could handle. His time of 20:54 was just four seconds from the win. Chavarria has quietly been placing high in his races all season and is ready to improve upon his 67th and 70th place finishes at the SoCal and State Championships last year.
