Ventura takes top spot in first sports information directors women's soccer poll
SAN BERNARDINO - After a year away from the field for many teams, the opening of the 2021 season was going to be full of question marks for many teams. As the women’s soccer season enters its second full week, some of those teams are starting to answer those questions.
But those answers have also led to a logjam atop the first CCSIA Women’s Soccer Poll of 2021.
Ten different schools received first-place votes in the weekly vote of the sports information organization, with Ventura narrowly taking the top spot in voting. Ventura received 177 points in the polling, going 3-0 to open the season. It edged out No. 2 Las Positas (170 points), which has started the season 4-0, posting four clean sheets while scoring 24 goals.
A powerful trio of teams from the Orange Empire Conference took the next three spots, all three of the teams starting the season 3-0 as well. Cypress took the third spot with 168 points, with Santiago Canyon, which won the state championship in 2019, ranked fourth with 152 points. Saddleback slid into the fifth spot thanks to its three shutouts and 25 goals scored.
Other schools receiving first-place votes were No. 6 Folsom Lake (2-0), No. 9 Taft (3-1) and No. 13 San Joaquin Delta (2-0).
