CUPERTINO - Santiago Canyon College took advantage of an own goal from San Joaquin Delta in the first half on Friday afternoon as the defending champion Hawks posted a 1-0 win to advance to the CCCAA Women's Soccer Championship game for the second straight year.
Santiago Canyon, which improved to 17-3-3, will face San Diego Mesa (22-1-2) at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Ironically, an own-goal was also the difference for the Olympians earlier in the day during their 1-0 win over Lake Tahoe.
The Hawks gained the only score of the game in the 20th minute on Friday after a corner kick to the front of the goal was inadvertently headed in by a Delta player. Other than that, the ball stayed clean in the field of play with just seven of the game's 15 shot attempts going on goal. Santiago Canyon goalie Ariana Radilla only had to make three saves while the Mustangs' two keepers - Marcella Salyer and Callie Crain - each had one.
Santiago Canyon, which beat Lake Tahoe in last year's final, also claimed state championships in 2006 and 2009.
