SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Katherine Sheehy scored from seven yards out in stoppage time on a chilly Friday night at American River College as Santa Barbara City College posted a 2-1 comeback win over Folsom Lake College, and will move on to face unbeaten Fresno City College for the California Community College Athletic Association Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday.
Sheehy's score capped two late goals for the Vaqueros, who improved to 21-0-1. Folsom Lake, the second seed from the north, ended its year with an impressive record of 21-2-2. Santa Barbara will put its unbeaten record up against Fresno City, which is also undefeated (25-0-1), to determine the state championship.
The win didn't come easy for the Vaqueros who trailed 1-0 after Keionna Claypoole's goal in the 49th minute put the Falcons in the lead. It was the first goal allowed by Santa Barbara in 14 games, a time spanning more than two months. The Vaqueros have given up just four goals all year.
Folsom Lake continued to lead the game into the latter parts of the semifinal but Santa Barbara found the equalizer in the 77th minute when Isabella Viana snuck through in the box and found the right side of the goal for her 19th goal of the year.
The Vaqueros continued to keep the pressure on as the game moved into stoppage time. It was then that Katherine Sheehy delivered the game-winner with her shot from inside the box, setting off a wild celebration that was continued a few minutes later at the final whistle.
Both goalies played well with Valerie Ogorodnikov posting five saves and Santa Barbara's Holly Telliard tallying three.
Neither Santa Barbara nor Fresno have won a state championship. Sunday's game starts at 2 p.m.
