Mt. SAC Takes 15 Point Lead on First Day of 2023 Men’s Wrestling Championship
Mt. SAC Men's Wrestling holds a 15 point team lead at the end of day one at the 2023 Men's Wrestling State Championships.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - On day one of the 2023 Men's Wrestling State Championships, the top ranked teams saw early success as expected.
With 102 total points, Mt. San Antonio College finished with the team lead after a full day of wrestling. The Mounties saw six of their 12 wrestlers battle their way into the semifinals for their respective weight classes. Alex Ramirez (157 LBS) and Zachary Parker (141 LBS) were their top two scorers as both earned falls to land 12 points a piece for their team.
Sacramento City had a nice start to the tournament and found themselves sitting in second place with 87 team points. Ben Quilpa (133 LBS), Ethan Boyd (165 LBS) and Adrian Chavez-Morales (184 LBS) dominated for the Panthers with 12 points each while combining for five falls and a technical fall.
Following closely behind was Fresno City, who posted 77.5 points on Friday. The Rams were led by Adrian Chavez who was the only member of the team to collect 12 points as he advanced to the semifinals with two falls.
Rounding out the top five was Cerritos (67.5) and Bakersfield (55.5). The Cerritos Falcons saw Kobe Pablo (285 LBS) cruise through the first two rounds with a couple falls to reach the semifinals in the heavyweight division while Derrek Alcantar (133 LBS) did the same for Bakersfield in the 133 pound bracket.
In addition to the top five teams, there are 11 schools that sent wrestlers to the semifinals, showing the depth of the talent in this year's tournament.
Championship Saturday will include semifinal matchups, consolation rounds and the finals. Start time is set for 10:00 a.m. at Cuesta College.
