Reedley, Modesto tied for lead after Day 1 of 3C2A Women's Golf Championship

PASO ROBLES – After Day 1, it’s anyone’s title to have as six teams are within 11 shots of each other after the opening round of the California Community College Athletic Association Women’s Golf State Championships on Monday at Hunter Ranch Golf Course.

Reedley College and Modesto Junior College finished with identical team scores of 337, with Sierra College just two shots off the lead at 339 and College of the Canyons three shots back at 340.

Nipping on their heels include Moorpark (346), Mt. San Antonio (348), Fullerton (354) and Sacramento City (369) and with forecasts for more breeze to come into the area for Tuesday’s final round, anything is possible.

Low round of the day went to Isabelle Olivas-Lowell from Citrus College, who shot the lone score under par, with a 3-under 69 on this par-72 course. She finished with seven birdies for the afternoon and took advantage of the calmer early-round weather.

College of the Canyons standout, Motoko Shimoji was next on the leaderboard with a 1-over, 73, followed by five 77s from Kylie Lau (Mt. San Antonio), Jordan Williams (Modesto), defending state champion Cathilyn Lee (Fullerton), Ethel Asequia (Reedley) and Lehapi Taungahihifo (College of the Desert).

The “Shot of the Day” came courtesy of Antelope Valley’s Taylor Waters. After suffering some bad luck on 15 when a good shot was not found and therefore penalized, she calmly strolled to the tee box on No. 16 and drained a hole-in-one, taking some of the sting off of the previous hole.

The second and final round of the 3C2A Women’s Golf State Championships will begin on Tuesday at 9:20 a.m. at Hunter Ranch Golf Course. Tee times from Monday will be in the opposite order on Tuesday.
