San Mesa's Allen, Mt. SAC's Varela Win 10K on Day 1 of 3C2A Track and Field Championships

Walnut, Calif. - Natalie Allen of San Diego Mesa College won the first running event, the 10,000 meters, at the 2026 3C2A State Track and Field Championships Friday evening at Mt. San Antonio College. The Olympians sophomore held the front position on the lead pack for most of the final mile, then broke away over the last two laps to win by a 10-second margin in 37 minutes, 49.11 seconds over Siena Pignataro of De Anza (37:59.97). El Camino’s Jadeyn Skefich (38:01.51) was the bronze medalist.
The men’s 10K went down to the wire with state season leader Diego Varela of Mt. SAC outkicking Joshua Morales of Cerritos to take the title in 32:03.79. Morales was just a second back (32:04.72). Ivan Guzman of Cuyamaca took bronze in 32:25.65.
Cerritos College took the top two places in the first field event, the hammer throw, to score 18 points. Aysia Mallory Felliciano got out to 171 feet, 4 inches on her fourth throw. She displaced teammate and early leader Miracle Siaosi, who had reached 167-5 in the second round. Genesis Mailangi of De Anza took the bronze medal at 159-8.
Olivia Powers of host Mt. SAC won the other first day field event, the javelin throw, reaching a state season best of 147-8 on her final attempt. De Anza’s Mailangi had a 139-0 final effort, No. 2 in the state this season, for the silver medal. Kristy Huynh of Cuesta placed third (126-7).
Levi Perez of Modesto JC won the men’s hammer throw with a personal best 175-10. Aiden Ishimaru of Hartnell also posted a best 171-3. for second place. State leader William Ouyang of Merritt (176-7 season best) was third at 170-3.
State men’s javelin throw leader Taiyo Ishiguro of Mt. SAC (207-11) needed a final effort of 202-6 to turn back Shasta’s Judah Werner, who had taken the lead at 195-8 in the second roundand extended it to 200-9 on his fifth throw.
COMBINED EVENTS: Lillian Thrasher of Monterey Peninsula took the first day lead in the women’s heptathlon with 3022 points after four events. Madison Thai of Moorpark leads a tight second place battle with 2871 points.
Marcus Madoski of Modesto JC added to his men’s decathlon lead after the initial day’s five events, scoring 886 points with a runaway triumph in the 400 meters in 48.47 seconds. His first day total of 3,872 points provides a solid edge over chasers Gunner Perez of El Camino (3,596) and Taiyo Ishiguro of Mt. SAC (3,551). Combined event competition resumes Saturday at noon.
TEAMS: In team scoring, the De Anza women added 10 points in the 10K, combining with Mailangi’s 14 in the throws, to take the first day lead with 24 points, ahead of Mt. SAC (19) and Cerritos (18).
Mt. SAC vaulted into the men’s team lead with 20 total points after Varella’s 10K triumph. Modesto and Cerritos are tied for second with 15.
Competition continues Saturday with state finals in all other running events starting at 3 p.m. and the remainder of the field events beginning at 1 p.m.
