South Coast duo shines in undefeated weeks

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Ella Haugo of Long Beach City College and Tatyana Cortez of Cerritos College earned a South Coast sweep of this week’s California Community College Fastpitch Coaches’ Association Player and Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday, March 23.

Haugo was dominant in a statement week for the Vikings as Long Beach picked up three ranked victories. The first year went 9-for-13 at the plate with four homers, including a grand slam to knock of No. 7 Mt. SAC on Thursday. All told, she drove in 12 runs, including a week-best six against Mt. SAC.

Cortez was dominant in the circle, holding opponents to one earned run across 15 innings pitched. She struck out 28 hitters, including a season-best 13 against Rio Hondo last Tuesday. She followed that up with 11 two days later in a win over Compton. Cortez leads the state with 176 punchouts.
