WALNUT - The Mt. San Antonio College softball program got their 2018 California Community College Softball State Championships off to the start they wanted on Thursday afternoon as they defeated Ohlone College 2-1. The No. 2 seed from the South, Mounties, overcame an early deficit to send the North No. 3 Renegades into the elimination round.
Ohlone jumped in front first, when freshman short stop Lauryn Garcia took a two-out pitch and sent it over the fence, to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead. From that point forward, Ohlone struggled to put runs on the board, stranding runners in the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings.
Mt. SAC meanwhile had some early chances, but couldn't cash in. The Mounties loaded up the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first but came up empty. Mt. SAC would have similar situations in the bottom of the second with a pair of runners, and then stranded in the third and fourth.
Mt. SAC would finally break through in the bottom of the fifth, and got a little help along the way. With two outs sophomore first baseman Michelle Banales got a life preserver when an Ohlone error allowed to her reach base and continue the inning. Sophomore catcher Michelle Santiago would make the Renegades pay when she hit the ball over the center field wall to make it 2-1 Mounties.
The Renegades would go down in order in the top of the sixth, before getting a two-out hit in the top of the seventh by freshman Brooke Niewoehner. Their potential rally would be short-lived though as sophomore Jessica Olvera induced a ground out to secure the win.
In the win, Mountie hurlers Briana Wheeler and Olvera held the Renegades to three total hits. Wheeler went 4.1 innings, giving up two hits, the one run, while striking out five. Wheeler didn't figure into the decision though as Olvera's (9-1) final 2.2 innings of work giving up just one hit and no walks, helped earn her the victory.
Mt. SAC advances through the winners side, and will face the winner of North No. 1 College of San Mateo vs South No. 4 El Camino College who play at 1:30 PM. Ohlone College will move into elimination bracket tomorrow at Citrus College at 1:30 PM.
