All-State and All-Regional Teams
The 2014 California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association is pleased to announce it's 2014 All-State and All-Region Awards. Headlining the awards are the State Players of the Year in Kali Pugh of Palomar College and Aleyna Benipayo of Solano College. East Los Angeles College's Alashanee Medina and Solano College's Shannon Mestas were named the State Pitchers of the Year, while Palomar College's Lacey Craft and Gavilan College's Nikki Dequin were named the Coaches of the Year.
Pugh along with the Co-Coach of the Year Craft of Palomar helped guide the Comets to a 31-4 overall record, Pacific Coast Conference Championship and the #1 overall seed in the South for the upcoming 2014 California Community College Athletic Association Softball Playoffs. Pugh led the entire CCCAA in batting, hitting .603. Pugh was second in RBI's (54), fourth in runs scored (55), second in on-base percentage (.630), and seventh in slugging percentage (.967).
Benipayo meanwhile displayed similarly impressive numbers in helping the Falcons to the #2 seed in the North. Benipayo was third in the entire CCCAA in batting average (.552), fifth in on-base percentage (.594), and fourth in slugging (.991). Benipayo also finished third in RBI's (53), and first in the entire State in runs scored (64). For good measure Benipayo also was third in the State in stolen bases, swiping 33 bags on the year.
In the circle, it was Medina who played a key role in East Los Angeles College winning their first ever South Coast Conference Championship. Medina was third in the State wins, going 25-8 on the year. Medina posted a 1.31 ERA, the seventh lowest in the State, and fanned 325 batters on the season, the second highest mark in California. Medina was a workhorse for the Huskies, logging 224.1 innings of work, the second most in the State.
Mestas meanwhile tagged team with Benipayo to form one of the most lethal offensive and defensive punches in the State. Mestas was fourth in the State in wins with a 21-1 record on the season. She was also fourth in the State in ERA (1.13), fifth in the State in K's (172), and was third in the State in K's per game (9.68).
Fresh off the 2013 CCCAA State Championship, Craft helped keep the Comets at the top of the heap all season long. Palomar was ranked in the State Top 5 all season long and finished the regular season ranked #1 according to the coaches. Craft also had Palomar finish 18-0 in the Pacific Coast Conference, the first time a PCAC team has done so since 2005.
Dequin meanwhile was recognized for her efforts in helping guide the Rams to a historic 2014 campaign. Gavilan finished 28-10 overall and won the outright Coast Conference South Division Title for the first time since 1984. Gavilan finished the season ranked #9 in the State and #5 in the Northern California Coaches Polls. The Rams were also seeded 5th in the upcoming Northern California Regionals.
