SANTA ANA - After a tough road loss to L.A. Mission on Friday night, the Long Beach City College men's soccer team bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Santa Ana College on Tuesday, tying their record at 1-1.
The Vikings controlled much of the first half, dominating possession but unable to capitalize on their chances. Jiro Uchida nearly broke through with a free kick that struck the post, while the Santa Ana goalkeeper stopped Kualano Doty-Navarro's breakaway. At the other end, starting keeper Fabio Ardizzoia came up big in the 27th minute with a key save to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
Santa Ana struck first after a scramble in the six-yard box, eventually knocking in the loose ball for the 1-0 lead. Long Beach responded in the 68th minute when Cesar Garcia Solorzano buried a header off a cross from Asael Sales. Sales continued his strong play just 11 minutes later, finding Julian Zarate on a perfectly timed centering pass to put the Vikings ahead. Defensively, Diego Penazola anchored the back line with an outstanding effort.
The victory also marked a milestone for Director of Soccer Operations and Head Coach Jorge Reyes, who recorded his 50th career win leading the program.
"It is special to get my fiftieth win in the city where I grew up and live in, and where I played one season," said Reyes. "I look forward to many more victories in this coming season and beyond."
