LACC shutout #11 Rio Hondo College in a 0-0 Draw
October 22, 2021
With no margin for error, the LACC Cubs took on Rio Hondo College on Friday, October 22nd and pulled off another impressive shutout on the road as they tied the hosts 0-0.
Coach Javier Aguiniga Campos had to make adjustments to his teams' back line due to losing central defender Ryan Couso for the rest of the season and left back Erik Perez, due to a red card suspension from the last game.
Rio Hondo could not find their rhythm and ceded the ball to a cubs team that seemed to control most of the match. Both goalkeepers did not see much action during the first half.
Things got exciting in the second half as LACC created scoring opportunities from set pieces. A corner kick taken by Felipe Alvarez found defender Mark Figueroa but his header went wide. Minutes later the exact same play was repeated as Figueroa missed again. The Rio Hondo roadrunners almost scored on a counterattack but their shot was saved by goalie Jair Villegas.
Jonathan Garcia tried from just outside the penalty box, forcing goalie Arturo Bustamante to make a spectacular save. On another attack Oscar Garcia's attempt went over the crossbar. In the waning minutes of the match Rio Hondo almost scored the wining goal but defender Michael Ramirez made a game saving clearance at the goal line.
The ref blew the final whistle and LACC's mission to not lose was accomplished. The cubs now have 2 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw in conference play. It was a homecoming for Coach Javier Aguiniga Campos as he spent 6 years at Rio Hondo College prior to becoming the head coach at LACC. Their next opponent on Tuesday night at 7pm against East Los Angeles College, which has the same 2-3-1 record as LACC. The next game is basically an early playoff game for both teams.
