LACC shows their best and worst against Mt.SAC
October 8, 2021
LOS ANGELES- With plenty of soccer left to play, the vicissitudes of this season have already taken the LA City Cubs on an emotional roller coaster. Two weeks ago they were riding high on a three game winning streak that suddenly turned into a three game losing streak.
Their latest home loss came at the hands of Mt. San Antonio College on October 8th, with a score of four goals to two. Injuries kept several LACC players from playing but the Cubs have shown to have a deep bench that can rise to the occasion.
Early in the match, a free kick by Paul Iñiguez found the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later it was Alex Mendez who made it 2-0. The Cubs were stunned but reacted quickly which allowed them to shorten the gap when in the 25th minute, Ivan Castrejon scored his fourth goal of the season and the leading scorer of his team.
This gave LACC the confidence in search of the equalizer and just when they were controlling the game, a mistake in the back allowed Alex Mendez to catch the goalkeeper off his line and score from about 35 yards. It was a huge blow to the Cubs who had to go to halftime down 3 to 1.
The second half saw a very competitive Cubs team fight every ball with the intensity of a final. In the 55th minute, Ivan Castrejon's shot was saved by the keeper but the rebound fell directly to a sprinting Oscar Garcia who had no problem scoring his second goal of the season. The LACC bench let out a roar and the cubs were once again within a reach to tie the game.
Both goalkeepers had to intervene on multiple occasions as LACC's first year program was giving one of the best teams in the South Coast Conference a serious run for its money. But a costly mistake with ten minutes left in the game saw the visitors celebrate jubilantly after Andrew Vazquez made it 4-2.
A the sound of the final whistle both teams congratulated each other for giving their best on the pitch. With a record of 4-6-3, LACC is now 0-2-0 in conference play with plenty left to play. They will visit Compton College on October 12th.
