September 24, 2021
LOS ANGELES- On Friday, September 24th, the Norco College Spartans came to LA City College and ended the Cubs' winning streak as they defeated LACC one goal to zero.
The LACC Cubs began very strong and created several opportunities including a goal that would be called off due to a controversial foul by Ivan Castrejon. The Mustangs would then create some chances through midfielder Cody Paul Bell's speed but a late tackle on Hristo Andrade, would in a yellow card for Norco's Manuel Zapata.
The only goal of the match was scored on a free kick taken by Gabriel Areyan that went over the wall and past goalkeeper Luis Villegas. The free kick came three minutes before halftime, as a foul outside the 18 yard box gave Norco the scoring opportunity that was perfectly executed to give them the lead. A lead they would hold on to, thanks to a brilliant performance by their goalkeeper in the second half.
LACC was determined to find the equalizer but David Calva denied Ivan Castrejon with a spectacular save at the start of the second half, as LACC responded with a fury of attack. Moments later a handball inside the box gave LACC a clear chance to tie the game. Midfielder Jonathan Garcia stepped up to take the penalty kick, but his shot would hit the crossbar and was marked offside when the rebound came directly to him.
LACC continued their attack and late in the game Axel Miranda's shot was going on target but once again Calva made a risky but brilliant save as he collided with the post to prevent the goal. LACC's Brandon Macedo was booked after a sliding tackle right before the ref blew the final whistle. The Cubs now have a record of three wins, three draws and three losses. Their next opponent will be College of The Sequoias at 6pm at LACC on tuesday, September 29th.
