CUPERTINO - The Mt. San Antonio College Mounties will be looking for their sixth state championship Sunday after dispatching Foothill College, 3-1, in a CCCAA Men's Soccer Championship semifinal matchup Friday morning at De Anza College.
The Mounties remained undefeated at 22-0-3 after jumping on the board on a Gerardo Cazares goal in the fourth minute. Herminio Padilla converted a penalty kick for the clincher in the 53rd minute, but Foothill climbed to within 2-1 on an Adrian Tompert PK in the 72nd.
Trailing 2-1, Foothill appeared to get the equalizer in extra time during the second half when a set piece led to a header into the back of the net. However, a foul in the box negated it. Mt. SAC's Angel Santoyo connected from the left side to make it 3-1 just before the final whistle.
Mt. SAC won titles in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016 and will face Fresno City in Sunday afternoon's championship in a rematch of the 2017 state semifinal won 2-1 by the Rams. Fresno City went on to claim its first state crown. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
Foothill finished its strong season with a 16-2-5 overall record.
