MADERA - was a sea of red (scores) during the first round of the 3C2A Men’s Golf State Championships on Sunday, with five of the eight teams shooting team scores under par at Dragonfly Golf Club in Madera.
The 6,795-yard, par-73 course showed little pushback against the best golfers in the state as an astounding THIRTY golfers turned in scores of par or lower.
Through one round of play, Reedley College leads the way with a team score of 10-under-par, 355, with Saddleback College just one shot back at 356. Sierra College sits in third place at 361, followed by Cuyamaca (363) Fresno City (364), Napa Valley (366), College of the Desert (371) and Riverside City College (371). With 16 shots separating first place from last place and another hot, breezy day in Monday’s forecast, anything is possible.
Among the several players in red numbers, Reedley’s Chase Bird and Napa Valley’s A.J. Tomasini fired darts at the flagstick all day and turned in matching 6-under-par 67s. The aptly-named Bird chased down four birdies and one eagle without one bogey on his scorecard, while Tomasini overcame his one bogey with seven birdies.
Saddleback’s Carson Adams carded a 5-under 68. After starting his round with a double-bogey, Adams turned things up and finished the next 17 holes a bogey-free 7-under-par after that.
The second-and-final round of the 3C2A Men’s Golf State Championship will kick off at 8 a.m. on Monday at Dragonfly Golf Club.
