Reedley Tigers roar to fifth consecutive Big 8 Conference men's golf championship
STOCKTON - Great weather and great golf resulted in a winning combination for the Reedley College men's golf team which used both to capture their fifth straight Big 8 Conference championship on Monday at Stockton Golf & Country Club.
The weather was warm and sunny with temperatures in the high 70's and with gentle breezes at 5-10 mph. The scoring conditions were very favorable on this day. The Tigers won the overall Big 8 Conference Championship (North & South Divisions) by defeating Folsom Lake by 20 shots in the head-to-head match, shooting a score of 18-over 373 for the five counting scores.
Leading the way for Reedley was Tommy O'Rourke, who shot a superb round of 72 (+1), and finished in T-2nd overall for the tournament. Morgan Cooper posted a nice round of 73, finishing in a T-5th position for the day while Bailey Flickinger and Dylan Otto each shot rounds of 75 for the Tigers. Xavier Coreno carded a round of 78 to cap the scoring on the day for Reedley. All five Tigers posted rounds in the 70s for a real solid team effort.
The victory extended the Tigers conference championship streak to five consecutive years (2015-2019) and eight of the past nine. The Tigers' were also well-represented on the Big 8 South Division All-Conference Team with five players receiving honors. Cooper was named the Most Valuable Player and Tommy O'Rourke, Flickinger, Otto and Coreno also were unanimous first-team selections.
Next up is the Northern California Regional Championships on Monday at Yolo Fliers Golf Club in Woodland. Sierra College is the host school. The championship will be a test of 36 holes of golf in one day. Tee times are set for 7:30 for the morning round, and 1:00 for the afternoon round. The Tigers are defending Northern California champions.
