San Mateo still unanimous No. 1 in Coaches Football Poll; Golden West in second at midseason break
SAN MATEO – While College of San Mateo maintains its season-long lead atop the JC Athletic Bureau’s poll for the California Community College Football Coaches Association this week, another upset of the No. 2 team over the weekend, Butte, caused another upward shift throughout the remainder of the top ten at the mid-season break.
Butte (4-1) had its eight-game winning streak upended at formerly No. 16 College of the Sequoias, 42-38, and fell to No. 8 this week. Sequoias (4-1) moved up to No. 12 as Northern California Football Conference teams completed non-league play.
Defending 3C2A state champion San Mateo (5-0) defeated host Fresno City College, 23-14, extending its National Division winning streak to 15 games and again taking all 13 first-place votes from coaches reps. Fresno (2-3) dropped to No. 19 (from 17th).
Golden West (5-0) is the “new” No. 2 team this week after winning its second Central League game in the Southern California Football Association, 56-14, over East Los Angeles.
Also moving up one spot apiece this week are still perfect (5-0): No. 3 Ventura, No. 4 Diablo Valley, No. 5 Southwestern, and No. 6 Monterey Peninsula.
All 66 3C2A teams have a bye this week before resuming play Oct. 9-11. Featured kick-off in the NCFC’s Bay 6 league will be No. 4 Diablo Valley at No. 1 CSM on Oct. 11.
