Unbeatens San Mateo, Golden West and Ventura still pace 3C2A football with 1st-place showdowns on tap
SAN MATEO – The same three teams continue to pace the JC Athletic Bureau’s poll for the California Community College Football Coaches Association, with College of San Mateo the unanimous No. 1 choice ahead of Golden West and Ventura, all 7-0.
CSM again took all 14 first-place poll votes this week and totaled 350 points. Golden West remains in second with 329 points and Ventura in third with 328. The trio is the only remaining National (state championship) Division unbeatens.
Golden West pits 4-0 Central League records with visiting No. 9 Cerritos on Saturday.
Butte (6-1) made the biggest leap in the top ten this week, jumping to No. 4 from the seventh spot. The Roadrunners share the NorCal League lead at 2-0 with No. 24 Sierra.
Reigning 3C2A state champion San Mateo now has the state’s only double-digit winning streak, at 17 games. College of the Sequoias took a 63-26 victory over then No. 5-ranked Monterey Peninsula in the Valley League Saturday that spoiled the Lobos’ 17-game skein (which included 11 American Division wins in 2024). Now No. 14 MPC hopes to rebound, hosting No. 20 Fresno CC on Saturday. Both are a game back in the Valley behind co-leaders (at 2-0) No. 11 Sequoias and No. 13 Modesto.
CSM faces a third straight Bay 6 league first-place battle this week, hosting No. 16 City College of San Francisco (5-2). They share the league lead at 2-0. No. 7 Diablo Valley (6-1) and No. 18 Foothill (4-3) are both a game back after losses to the Bulldogs and play each other Friday night in Pleasant Hill.
No. 3 Ventura is the National Division’s only outright league leader (4-0 in the Northern) with three weeks left in the regular season. No. 5 Mt. San Antonio and Long Beach are 3-1 and meet this Saturday in Walnut – before each takes on Ventura the final two weeks.
No. 8 El Camino, which got a school record 266 rushing yards (with 3 long TD runs) from sophomore RB Damonte Bias in last week’s 45-31 win over Palomar, co-leads the Southern League at 4-0 with No. 10 Saddleback. ElCo visits No. 12 Southwestern Saturday. Formerly No. 4 Southwestern lost its first 2025 game last week, 69-42, to No. 15 Riverside. They share second place in the league.
