San Mateo, Riverside City and Mt. San Antonio are 1-2-3 in football coaches poll
SAN MATEO – California Community College Football Coaches continue to vote defending 3C2A state champion College of San Mateo No. 1 in this week’s poll, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. The Bulldogs, who recorded a 24-9 season-opening victory over visiting Sierra College on Saturday, took 13 (of 18) first-place votes and totaled 441 points this week. Riverside City College is No. 2 with 413 points and two first-place nods, just one point ahead of Mt. San Antonio. RCC, with new head coach Kevin Craft, opened with a 53-30 win over Long Beach CC, while Mt. SAC downed Cerritos, 45-20.
Holding the 4 spot this week is Modesto, following a 40-14 opening triumph over Laney. Butte is up a notch to No. 5 after handling Reedley, 38-7, in the state season opener on Friday. Reedley doesn’t get any relief this week, hosting San Mateo on Saturday afternoon, as non-league play continues. Reedley, however, has a great quarterback heritage that includes Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen -- who began his college career with the Tigers, throwing for 24 TDs in 2014.
A pair of top clashes this Saturday feature opening game winners Riverside at No. 7 Golden West and No. 9 San Diego Mesa at Mt. SAC. Modesto visits No. 18 Santa Rosa, which had new head coach Dante De Paola debut with a 41-38 overtime win over City College of San Francisco. Butte gets the week’s proceedings underway on Friday evening at Laney.
Other top 10 games:
No. 6 El Camino hosts No. 20 College of the Canyons; No. 10 Fullerton visits at No. 8 Ventura.
