SAN MATEO - College of San Mateo is the new leader – by a single point – in this week's poll of California Community College football coaches, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. CSM garnered 269 points and six first place votes from coaches while Riverside City College had five top ballots and 268 points. Both teams had important wins over unbeaten foes to close out non-league play with 5-0 records. Formerly No. 2 San Mateo took care of No. 3 Modesto JC, 35-12, making big plays on defense and special teams. Riverside, the No. 1 team the last three weeks, knocked off No. 8 San Diego Mesa, 61-26, dropping the Olympians to No. 13.

Meanwhile, the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) has Riverside City with a slight lead over San Mateo in its top 25 poll after garnering 9 of 11 points. Modesto holds down the No. 3 spot with College of the Canyons and City College of San Francisco tied for fourth.

Three teams each moved up one position to complete this week's JCAB top top five. Saddleback, also 5-0, is No. 3 after getting past Mt. San Antonio, 27-24, (dropping the Mounties four spots to No. 18). No. 4 Ventura edged recent 2-time state champion Fullerton, 48-47, in overtime. No. 5 City College of San Francisco, another multi-time state champ, beat Siskiyous, 73-7.
