SACRAMENTO - For the first time two at-large qualifiers will meet in the California Community College Athletic Association football championship game on Saturday, Dec. 8.
Laney (10-2), the Bay 6 League runner-up, will play Northern League runner-up Ventura College (11-1) in the 1 p.m. CCCAA title game at Sacramento City College’s Hughes Stadium.
--Laney defeated visiting Fresno City College, 24-7, to win the Northern California Football Conference title on Nov. 24 and earn its first official state championship berth.
--Ventura upset unbeaten Riverside City College, 31-21, in the Southern California Football Association finals.
In the first round of the playoffs, the previous week, the Pirates eliminated the state’s other unbeaten team, state top-ranked College of the Canyons, 24-13. Canyons had given Ventura its only loss during Northern League play. Laney, in similar fashion, beat reigning NCFC champ San Mateo, 14-0, in the NorCal semifinals to avenge an earlier Bay 6 league loss to the Bulldogs.

LANEY FOOTBALL HISTORY (information from SID Scott Strain):
Laney won mythical state and national titles in 1966, during a 20-game win streak following the debut of its program in 1965. The Eagles upset City College of San Francisco in the 1966 Prune Bowl at San Jose State’s Spartan Stadium, 35-13, in a game that featured future pro stars Leon Burns of Laney and O.J. Simpson of CCSF.
--Other "mythical" national championship games included the 1982 Bay Bowl between undefeated Laney and undefeated Sacramento City College. Sacramento won, 41-35.
--In 1994, undefeated Laney met undefeated CCSF in the San Francisco Community College Bowl. CCSF won 28-23.
There were no “official” state championship games in those years.
The Eagles started their program with that still school record 20-game winning streak. The first game was against San Luis Obispo College (now Cuesta) at Castlemont High School in Oakland, a 26-0 victory. The next game was away (of course) against San Quentin State Prison, a 19-0 win. The Eagles did not lose until Oct. 7, 1967, 14-8, at Monterey Peninsula College.
Prior to having its own stadium, Laney played home games at Frank Youell Field (also the home of the Oakland Raiders until the Coliseum was ready in 1966). Laney spent three years there (1966-68), then went to Castlemont H.S. (1969), Thompson Field in Alameda (1970), Contra Costa College (1971-72). The first home game at Laney was in 1973.
