Mt. San Antonio unseats Santa Rosa for #1 on the Final State Top 25 Baseball Poll
(LOS ANGELES) -- After capturing the program's first 3C2A state title since Lyndon B. Johnson was U.S. President (1965), Mt. San Antonio College received all 12 first-place votes to grab the #1 ranking in the Final 2025 California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) State Baseball Top 25 poll.
Santa Rosa had occupied the top slot all regular season, but the Bear Cubs saw their amazing season (44-3) ended by fellow Big 8 Conference foe Sierra at the NorCal Regional Finals. SRJC held a 24-game win streak with a 7-5 opening win over the Wolverines, but Sierra then handed Santa Rosa its first 2-game losing streak all season, advancing to the state tourney thanks to 15-9, and then 3-1 victories.
Mt. SAC 45-6 won its third state crown in its history and became the first South Coast Conference team to win state since Long Beach City captured the 2006 championship. Ironically, Vikings head coach Casey Crook, who directed that winning squad, announced his retirement from coaching after LBCC went three games before losing its SoCal Regional Round 1 series to Glendale.
Meanwhile, the Mounties broke the Orange Empire Conference's streak of four straight state title runs from 2019-2024 and are the eighth different college to win at state since 2016. San Joaquin Delta remains the last North team to capture the title back in 2018.
It was state batting champion and state tournament MVP Landon White (.481 overall average) who delivered in big moments for Mt. SAC. With West Valley leading 5-4 in the top of the ninth, White homered to center to tie it and the Mounties then completed its finals victory in 13 innings, 8-5. In that win, Mt. SAC pitchers Brenden Mechaca, Sam Silversmith (eight Ks in five scoreless relief innings as the mound winner) and Izeah Muniz (one-inning save) combined to strike out 17 WVC hitters.
The postseason was as advertised as far as the closeness of so many games. There were 20 games decided by one run and 12 that went to extra innings.
On the final poll, Mt. SAC climbed two spots to garner #1 while West Valley (40-13) boasts as the top North squad at #2, moving up three positions. Cypress (39-12) only slipped one to #3 and Sierra (33-16) took a giant leap 11 rankings to #4. SRJC settles for a 4-spot drop to #5, Fresno City (37-9) shuffles up two to #6, Palomar (36-13) falls one to #7, and Glendale (33-15-1) jumps on to the top 10 at #8 after sitting at #14 in the regular season final poll.
Despite an impressive starting pitching staff, Cerritos (33-11) was upset in the Super Regionals by both Glendale and #14 El Camino and descends two to #9. Riverside City (31-14) took an elevator up three floors to #10.
After Sierra, San Mateo made the biggest movement up eight slots to #16. At #18 Fullerton, #20 Cuesta, and #22 Los Medanos, all teams that advanced to the Super Regionals, each achieved positions on the final poll. The Orange Empire had the most teams of any conference in the final rankings with five (the two Coast Divisions added up to five as well).
In the "We Wuz Robbed" department, San Diego Mesa was left off the Top 25 despite advancing to the Super Regionals with a series sweep over #19 Santa Ana. San Joaquin Delta also made it to Super Regionals by downing #21 Chabot in three games but did not make enough of a dent to impress the voters.
Laney, co-Bay Valley champs, and Santa Barbara City, co-Western State North Division champs, were the only conference champion teams to not make the final rankings despite both being rated on the final regular season poll.
The South got the final rankings edge over the North in the region race, 13-12.
