Cypress stays alive at state baseball championship tourney
WALNUT – The Cypress College Chargers have survived and advanced with a 5-2 win over Sierra College in the first elimination game of the 2025 3C2A Baseball State Championships on Sunday, hosted by Mt. San Antonio College.
With the win, the Chargers (38-11) will move onto the 6 p.m. elimination game between the loser of the championship semifinal matchup between Mt. SAC and West Valley. The loss ends the Wolverines' season at 33-16.
Bradley Navarro went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Chargers, while Travis Curry added a pair of hits and scored twice.
Sierra jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Cypress starter Brandon Wyland (9-2), but the sophomore righty buckled down and held the Wolverines in check the rest of the way, going six strong innings, allowing five hits, four walks and three strikeouts.
Cypress took advantage of some control issues in the bottom of the third inning from Sierra starter Matias Michel. An infield single by Curry was followed by a hit batter and walk to load the bases. Justin Tillar was plunked to bring in the first run of the game and a bases-loaded walk by Evan Rolbiecki scored the tying run.
In the bottom of the fifth, a two-out walk by Dustin Robinson was followed quickly by a run-scoring triple off the bat of Braden Ruiz, putting the Chargers up, 3-2.
A leadoff hit-by-pitch by Zach Anderson was eventually cashed in when Navarro lined a two-out single to center to make it 4-2.
Navarro padded the Chargers' advantage in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI-single, scoring Curry who led off with a double to right-center.
