SACRAMENTO - Freshman Bryson McArn had a very hot day at the plate leading the Cosumnes River College offense going 4 for 4 with 3 RBI's but visiting Lassen College scored 10 runs over the middle three innings to post a 17-9 nonconference baseball win on Thursday.
This game had everything you would like to see offensively from the Hawks, unfortunately, pitching and the defense were not on the same page. The Hawks committed a season-high six errors in the field. The pitching staff, ed by starter freshman Anthony Galindo, did not fair well either. Giving up 16 hits, the Cosumnes River found itself with a very early lead through the first three innings of play. It came to a halt when the Cougars put up four runs in the fourth inning and tacked on another five in the top of the fifth.
A late spark in the bottom of the sixth inning had the Hawks only trailing 11-9. Going into the top of the eighth inning, the Cougars put a big insurance capper on the Hawks with a two-run home run in the inning. The next two innings saw the Hawks give up a total of six unanswered runs to put the game out of reach.
"We just did not value the baseball like we are supposed to," said head coach Donnie Mico. "Too many mistakes were made in non-hitter counts and the addition to the overall miscues on defense really put our club in a very tough spot. We have to clean it up. We have a talented group, they just need to learn to breathe, make the routine (plays) on defense and cut down on the strikeouts from the offensive side as well."
The Hawks travel to Merced JC Friday and Saturday for a two-game away series. Friday's contest will be at 5 pm and Saturday's game is set for noon.
