Robert Lewis Set to Retire at End of Academic Year
Pasadena, Calif. - Pasadena City College sports information director Robert Lewis will retire following his 36th year on the job, according to the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA). Lewis has set a date of July 1, 2026, following a historic career at the school.
"I am most proud of my work in promoting student-athletes at a college level that doesn't get enough publicity," Lewis said. "The ability to shape the education and athletics path for so many has been very rewarding."
Lewis has seen a lot of changes in the industry over the years, many of which were related to electronic advancements in the field. In 2016, Lewis helped launch PCC's athletics website, pcclancers.com. In addition, he added social media to his repertoire with the addition of X/Twitter and Instagram to keep up with the growing electronic trends in the industry.
Lewis' work extended to serving as chairman of the PCC Sports Hall of Fame. Besides being the event planner, he also served as the selection committee coordinator, nominee researcher, and general historian for athletics.
In May after serving as master of ceremonies for the well-attended 2026 Pasadena City College Sports Hall of Fame event, Lewis himself was entered into the prestigious HOF as the first non-athlete or coach ever inducted.
Lewis is proud of helping PCC student-athletes receive more than $300,000 over the past 20 years in various scholarships offered by PCC through the Elizabeth Jensen fund and other scholarships geared toward Lancers student-athletes.
He was honored as one of three finalists nominated for the 2018 Risser Award for Outstanding Support for Education. In 2023, his writing work was recognized as a finalist for Best Online Sports Story by the Los Angeles Press Club.
In 2008, Lewis received the prestigious Brass Top Award for career achievement by the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA). He is one of the founding fathers of the CCCSIA and is a long-time executive board member and treasurer, regularly participating in the association's meetings and affairs.
"Robert was a force in the industry for nearly four decades," Saddleback SID and 2026 Brass Top recipient Brad Hoiseth said. "No one outworked him and his commitment to serve to the athletes at PCC never wavered up until the final out of his final game at the school. You'd have to search long and hard to find someone more committed to his craft."
Lewis has regularly worked at the state level as a SID at various 3C2A championship events, including women's and men's volleyball, swimming and diving, women's badminton, water polo, basketball, and soccer. He currently serves as state publicist for three different coaches associations, including women's volleyball, women's basketball, and baseball. In addition, Lewis has been the South Coast Conference SID for 22 years.
Lewis plans to continue working in the field in a freelance capacity following his retirement.
"It's been a great ride all these years working at the community college level, something I still plan on doing for years to come," he said on retiring from PCC but continuing his work for various coaches' associations.
Before coming to PCC, he served as SID at West Los Angeles College (1989-1991) and was a prep/community college sportswriter at the Daily Breeze, Evening Outlook, and Los Angeles Times. Lewis worked as a part-time sports producer at KCOP-Channel 13 News and served as statistician for NHL Radio on Westwood One.
Lewis earned a bachelor's degree in journalism at California State University, Northridge in 1989. Lewis previously attended Santa Monica College and was a two-year letterman as a relief pitcher on the Corsairs baseball team in 1985-86. He also served as sports editor of the award-winning student newspaper--The Corsair.
