Davis and Havens lead after day one of 3C2A SoCal Heptathlon/Decathlon Regionals
MISSION VIEJO - The California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) Heptathlon/Decathlon Southern California Regional Finals finished up day one at Saddleback College on Tuesday. Cerritos College’s Jazzmine Davis and San Diego Mesa College’s Jeremiah Havens lead after the opening day.
Davis is the heavy favorite to win the regional title as she came into the meet with the highest score in the state this season when she finished with 4,165 points at the Cerritos Multi on March 9. Davis has 2,800 points through four events on Tuesday to lead by a wide margin. Davis finished first in the 100-meter hurdles (14.39) and 200 meters (25.17) while finishing third in the shot put (8.44m) and fourth in the high jump (1.46m).
Behind Davis in second place is Palomar College’s Janiece Pingley with 2,274 points. Pingley won the high jump (1.55m) while finishing third in the 100-meter hurdles (17.04), seventh in the shot put (8.12m) and ninth in the 200 meters (28.44).
Rounding out the top five in the heptathlon on day one was Moorpark College’s Mia Nilsen-Aguilar (2,203), Orange Coast College’s Katelyn Muniz (2,104) and Cerritos College’s Michelle Campos (2,089).
Havens was one of the favorites heading into the regional finals and leads the decathlon competition with 3,504 points through five events. He won both the 100 meters (11.01) and 400 meters (50.99) while finishing second in the shot put (12.34m), third in the long jump (6.50m) and sixth in the high jump (1.71m).
Unlike the heptathlon, the scores are very close in the decathlon. Havens has an 87-point lead on Orange Coast College’s Cayden Loth, who totaled 3,417 points on day one. Loth was a winner in the shot put (12.67m) while finishing fifth in the 100 meters (11.29), long jump (6.44m) and high jump (1.77m). Loth also finished seventh in the 400 meters (52.87).
Rounding out the top five in the decathlon were Santa Barbara City College’s Ryan Gregory (3,401), Riverside City College’s Reno Vasquez (3,391) and San Diego Mesa College’s Bennett Dondoyano (3,286).
Day two from Saddleback College is scheduled to start at 10:30 AM inside the stadium.
