Goldsberry, Van Weems earn Athlete of the Month accolades
GLENDORA, Calif. - Championships proved to be the common denominator for Fresno City College women's volleyball player Jenna Goldsberry and Cerritos College wrestler David Van Weems, who were named Wednesday as the CCCAA/CCCSIA Athletes of the Month for November, sponsored by Rally Factory.
Fresno sophomore Jenna Goldsberry put on a clinic at the CCCAA State Championships, helping the Rams win their college's first-ever state volleyball title. Fresno City went 6-0 to finish of an undefeated Central Valley Conference title while going a perfect 48-0 in sets this year (18-0 in November).
She excelled in November with 13 kills and a .500 hitting percentage in a first-round Northern California Regional win over Foothill College, then had 19 kills and 12 digs in second-round sweep over Feather River College. Her team won all nine of their sets at the state tournament as they swept through the top three seeds from the south.
Goldsberry was named MVP at the state championship. She planted 13 kills and hit .500 in a sweep over Cypress before finishing off the state crown with a spectacular 19 kills and 14 digs in Fresno City's sweep over L.A Pierce. She totaled 73 kills in five playoff victories while hitting a spectacular .388 against all top-ranked state opponents.

Competing at 197 pounds, David van Weems posted a spotless 8-0 record during the month of November, which included a championship at the Fresno City Open. At that tournament, Van Weems, who went on to win the CCCAA State Championship, defeated Kalvin Stuckey of Fresno and Wes Ruffer of Lassen, who placed second and third, respectively, at the state tournament.
Van Weems also won all three of his matches at the Simpson Duals, which featured three of the top community colleges from outside of California. He capped off the month by defeating Stuckey, 27-11, at the CCCAA State Team Duals, helping the Falcons finish first. Van Weems defeated Stuckey for the final time in the state championship match and concluded the season with a perfect 23-0 record.

Other nominees for the women’s award included Carolin Chang (Santa Barbara City College, golf), Miranda Daschian (Cuesta College, cross country), Carolin Jaramillo (Cerritos College, soccer), Emily Martin (Riverside City College, water polo) and Gabbi Perez (Fullerton College, water polo).
Nominees on the men’s side also included Wyatt Clapper (Modesto Junior College, football), Peter Lovas (Golden West College, water polo), Jake Maier (Long Beach City College, football), Joseph McDaniel (West Hills College, football) and Sean McDermott (Cuesta College, cross country).
