Bio

Bruce Werner received his Bachelor’s degree from Whitworth College and his Master’s degree from Washington State University, where he also was the men’s tennis coach.

Accepting a position at Chabot College, he taught PE and was the men’s tennis coach and assistant football coach for the next 13 years. During that time he earned his Doctorate from WSU. In 1975, while still coaching at Chabot, Bruce and nine other faculty members started the Valley Campus, today known as Las Positas College. In 1977 Bruce went to Cosumnes River College as Dean of PE/Athletics. In 1979 he moved to American River College, where he remained for 22 years. He served as VP of Instruction at Folsom Lake College from 2001 until his retirement in 2004.

Bruce was a charter member of the CCC Tennis Coaches Association, and longtime member of the CCC Football Coaches Association. Bruce is a member of the CCCFCA Hall of Fame.

He served as president of the Valley and Camino Norte conferences, and was a founding member of the NorCal Football Association. He was the first president of the NCFA, president of the Mid Empire Football Conference, and first commissioner of the Big 7 (now Big 8) Conference. Bruce was president of the CCCADA, the 1999 Athletic Director of the Year, and is a member of the CCCADA Hall of Fame.

Bruce was a co-founder and first president of SCOPE (now CCCPE) which led a successful campaign in the early 80’s to defeat the movement to defund community college PE. He was the 1998 SCOPE Physical Education Administrator of the Year.

His COA (now CCCAA) duties included representing the sport of football and serving as the first Management Council Chairperson. He received the CCLC’s Courage to Lead Award and the ARC Patron’s Club Award for Management Excellence.

Bruce is a past member of the Sacramento Sports Commission, chaired the local organizing committee for the 1995 Mobil USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and worked in a facilities and security management position for the 2000 and 2004 US Olympic Track and Field Trials. He received the Sacramento CVB Five-Star Award for Community Service for his work in these projects. Bruce and his wife Pam have four children and seven grandchildren.
