Bio

Ann Heck was at the center of the band of community college sisters,, serving as their head coach at California State University, Long Beach, in the 19700s. Ann reminds people that we didnnt recruit at that time,, but her coaching ability likely played a role in attracting these talented young ladies to join together at CSULB. 

Ann is a trailblazer in womenns volleyball who got involved with the sport in the 19600s. She was a member of the United States Womenns Volleyball Team at the 1968 Summer Olympics, Mexico. She was also involved with the Extramural Coordinating Council of Southern California Colleges and was chair of the committee that drafted the first policy and eligibility standards for womenns intercollegiate completion in Southern California. She played at UC Santa Barbara where she earned her BA in Physical Education in 1964. She then taught and coached at Carlmont High School in Belmont, CA. Ann later earned her MA in PE from the University of Southern California and followed that with a teaching role at Corona Del Mar High School. She then went to Long Beach State where she coached both womenns tennis and volleyball. Her team was runner up in the AIAW National Championship in 1972. At the same time, Ann co-authored Volleyball for Coaches and Teachers and was Long Beach Statees women's athletic director. 

Ann then moved on to coach at the community college level, where she served as the womenns volleyball coach at San Diego Mesa College from 1977 until 1999. There, Ann won six conference titles and was in the COA/CCCAA State Championships twice. In her 22 years at San Diego Mesa, Ann received the Pacific Coast Conference Coach of the Yearr award for volleyball seven times and Coach of the Year for all womenns sports three times. In 1999, Ann was inducted into the California Community College Womenns Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and she was honored as the 2002-2003 Athletic Director of the Year by the CCCADA. Ann served on the COA/CCCAA Management Council for six years.
