Johnson, Fernandez garner Athlete of the Month accolades
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The California Community College Sports Information Association is pleased to announce its 2017 October Athletes of the Month. Long Beach City College’s Victoria Johnson and Mt. San Antonio College’s Manuel Fernandez were named the respective award winners.
Victoria Johnson | Long Beach City College | Women’s Water Polo | Sophomore
Johnson has led the Vikings' offense with 76 goals, 21 assists and 21 steals in 21 games through the month of October. Recently she was the catalyst in Long Beach's 2OT win over Mt.SAC, scoring six out of eight goals for the Vikings.
Manuel Fernandez | Mt. SAC College | Men’s Cross Country | Sophomore
Manuel Fernandez was a major reason why the Mt. SAC Men’s Cross Country Team was undefeated in community college competition through the month of October. The sophomore out of Bassett High School (La Puente, CA) finished the regular season with four consecutive individual championships. He was undefeated in the month of October, capturing the Tour de Cuesta, Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational and the South Coast Conference Championship individual titles. On the last day of September, Fernandez won his first race of the season, capturing the Willamette Invitational, in Salem (OR). He ran the eight-kilometer course in 24:33, faster than over 390 runners, from 38 teams, including 30 four-year universities. In addition, Fernandez was named the 2017 South Coast Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Year.
