Cerritos, the No. 1 seed in Southern California, will carry a 17-match win streak into Wednesday's CCCAA Dual Team Women's Tennis final while No. 4 De Anza hopes to continue its string of upsets.
The Falcons are 24-1 this year with their only loss coming to NCAA Div. 3 Whittier College. They won the South Coast Conference with a perfect 12-0 record. They captured the Southern Cal Regional title by beating No. 7 SBCC 6-1, No. 6 Mt. San Antonio 5-2 and No. 5 Desert, the South Coast runner-up, 5-3.
This is the Falcons' first trip to the women's dual team state championship, which will take place on Wednesday, April 20 at the Pierpont Racquet Club in Ventura, starting at 1 p.m.
Cerritos went 2-1 in doubles vs. Desert in Saturday's So Cal final, then won three singles matches capped by Danielle Pastor, who rallied to claim her last three games in a 6-4, 7-5 triumph at No. 6. She also won 8-1 in doubles with Jovana Milosevic.
Milosevic, a sophomore from Serbia, is 22-3 in singles (playing mostly No. 5) and 17-4 in doubles with Pastor. Pastor is 23-1 in singles. No. 1 player Taylor Heath is 22-6 in singles and Anastasia Khomyachenko and Valentina Polonyi are 18-3
De Anza (16-3), located in Cupertino, was the runner-up in the Coast Conference. The Dons were seeded No. 4 in the Northern Cal Regional and defeated Folsom Lake 6-1, then upset No. 1 Fresno City 5-3 and No. 2 Canada 5-4.
The Dons are led by No. 1 Van Nguyen, who's lost just once this year and is the No. 1 seed in the North for the State Individual Championships, which run Thursday through Sunday at The Ojai Tournament.
The Coast Conference sent four teams to the North Regional. De Anza's 5-4 win over Coast champion Canada was its first in three meetings this year.
This is the fourth Regional title for the Dons, who won the state championship in 1998. The South has won 34 of 36 women's state titles since 1978.
