A pair of second-half goals lifted College of the Desert (4-4-2, 3-0 IEAC) past the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles (4-8-1, 2-2) of Menifee, 2-0, on Tuesday, keeping the Roadrunners undefeated in Conference play and earning their third clean sheet of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alejandra Carrillo (La Quinta H.S.) made five saves to earn her fourth win and third shutout in her eighth start, as Mt. San Jacinto pressed hard throughout the first half.
Neither side could break through before the break, with play largely confined to the midfield. The deadlock held until the 68th minute, when freshman forward Jajayra Delgado Polanco (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) poked a shot at the Eagles keeper that deflected to sophomore defender Lauren Cornwell (Palm Desert H.S.). Cornwell pounded it into the back of the net for the first goal of her career and a 1-0 lead.
Sixteen minutes later, the Roadrunners doubled the advantage. Sophomore forward Willow Jones (Yucca Valley H.S.) collected her first career assist with a lobbed pass to freshman midfielder Nevaeh Cruz (Palm Desert H.S.), who scored her third goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Series notes: The Roadrunners first met Mt. San Jacinto in 1997 and hold a 13-29-7 all-time record against the Eagles, including 9-16-1 in Palm Desert.
