Long Beach Narrowly Edges Competition in First 3CSIA Poll

Now that we're more than a month into the season, many would think we'd start to see some separation between the top teams in a given sport.

That's not the case in women's soccer, with six teams entering the week without a loss. And those results show in the results of the first bi-weekly poll of California's sports information professionals. Three teams are clustered within five points of one another atop the 3C2A Sports Information Association's poll, released Oct. 6.

Long Beach (9-0-1), with five first-place votes, sits atop the rankings, with only a two-point advantage over Saddleback (9-1-1), which received four first-place votes. And Folsom Lake (9-0-1), with three first-place votes, is lingering only five points behind the top spot.

The next three are also a tightly packed group. San Francisco City (8-0-2) came in at No. 4 with 224 points, with Fresno City (10-1) a point behind at No. 5. Santiago Canyon (7-0-1) – one of two other teams to receive a first-place vote – came in at No. 6 with 215 points.

After that, there is a steep drop to No. 7 Reedley (7-0-2), who clock in with 166 points, four ahead of MiraCosta at No. 8. Modesto landed at No. 9, while defending state champion Sierra – which received the other first-place vote – come in at No. 10, with a one-point advantage over No. 11 Santa Barbara.

The rest of the bottom half of the poll feature teams familiar – Mt. San Antonio (6-2) at 13 and Cypress (5-2-2) at 18 – and unfamiliar – unbeaten San Diego Miramar (7-0-2) at No. 16. The final unbeaten, Southwestern (5-0-6), ended up outside the Top 20.
