Evergreen Valley Tops First 3CSIA Top 20 Poll
For many men's soccer teams in the early part of their schedule, it's all about getting a positive result. Win or draw, get a positive result.
And for the teams ranked in the top 20 of the first bi-weekly poll of California's sports information professionals, it shows.
But in the end, there was one clear favorite amongst the voters in the 3C2A Sports Information Association's poll, released Oct. 6.
Evergreen Valley (8-0-2), one of three unbeaten teams remaining this season, took 12 of the 14 first-place votes to sit atop the poll.
Northern teams dominated the top half of the poll with four of the top five coming from the upper half of the state. Santa Rosa (6-1) had the other two first place votes to land at No. 2, with Skyline (8-1-1) at No. 4 and Canada (7-2) taking No. 5.
The lone southern team in the top five was Cuyamaca (7-1-1) coming in at No. 3, while their Pacific Coast Athletic Conference foes, Southwestern (7-1-1) clocking in as the next team from the south in the Top 20 at No. 6.
The remainder of the Top 10 was split between regions, with Merced (5-1-5) at No. 7 and Mt. San Antonio (6-3-1) at No. 8. Fresno City (6-3-1) was No. 9 and San Bernardino Valley (4-1-5) rounded out the top 10.
The South dominated the back half of the poll, holding seven of the 10 spots, as there were 10 points separating No. 10 from No. 14 in the poll. With 97 points, SBVC holds a two-point advantage over No. 11 East Los Angeles (9-2). Long Beach (5-2-2) and Butte (5-1-2) tied at No. 12 with 88 points, and Fullerton (4-1-3) at No. 14 with 87 points.
Unbeaten Chaffey (6-0-5) came in at No. 17, while the other unbeaten, Moorpark (5-0-4) ended up four points outside the top 20.
