SACRAMENTO – Cuyamaca College's Jesse Lopez scored in the first overtime period to break a 1-1 tie with Canada while Matteo De Gennaro's score in the 87th minute lifted Butte to a 1-0 win over Long Beach City in a pair of semifinal matches at the 3C2A Men's Soccer Championship at American River College on Friday.
Both teams were double-digit seeds during the regional playoffs and entered as the No. 2 seeds from their respective regions at the state championship this weekend. Butte (18-4-4) and Cuyamaca (17-4-2) will square off for the banner on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The game will be streamed on a pay-per-view basis by BAOSN.TV and available here.
SEMIFINAL #1 - (S2) Cuyamaca 2, (N1) Canada 1
Cuyamaca, , the south's 10th seed during the regional playoffs, returns to the state championship game for the second straight year by overcoming a 1-0 deficit against the Colts to win its 14th straight game.
Canada wasted little time jumping on top, getting a score from in the game's second minute when Vlad Tomutiu found Noah Lake in front of the goal.
That score stood for more than 30 minutes until the 34th minute when Enirque Hernandez's spectacular goal from the left side found the upper right side of the net.
The teams held each other scoreless for the rest of regulation, forcing two overtime periods. Neither team could break through until late in the first extra period when Ali Almaliki's direct kick from just outside the box cleared Canada's wall and into the left side.
That proved to be the difference-maker as Cuyamaca held off the Colts the remainder of the way. Broward Maryan had five saves in goal for the Coyotes while Luis Evangelista had three for Canada.
The Colts finished their season 14-4-7.
SEMIFINAL #2 - (N2) Butte 1, (S1) Long Beach City 0
Despite outshooting Butte 25-8, Long Beach City couldn't find the back of the net against a stingy Butte defense and it was the Roadrunners who took advantage by scoring in the 87th minute when Di Gennaro stole a pass in front of the goal and hit a chipped over the goalkeeper.
The Vikings kept the pressure up the whole game but Butte was able to withstand it with a solid defense that was able to bend but not break.
Manuel Diaz was strong in goal for the Roadrunners, stopping all seven shots on goal. Jose Mariscal had three shots on goal for Long Beach while Julian Zarate had two.
