Consensus in both CCCSIA and JC Athletic Bureau polls places Riverside City at No. 1
SACRAMENTO - Riverside City College enters the third week of play as the third team to top the weekly poll of California Community College football coaches, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. The same early season phenomenon holds true in the CCCSIA poll of sports information directors.
Last season's state finalists, champion Laney and runner-up Ventura, have stumbled out of the blocks, relinquishing top rankings in successive weeks.
Riverside received six first-place votes from coaches this week to claim the top spot with 255 points, ahead of Butte (248), College of San Mateo (223), Saddleback (221), and American River (216).
Riverside edged formerly No. 12 Fullerton, 16-9 on Saturday, dropping the Hornets to No. 15 this week. Saddleback took down Ventura, 48-24, and the Pirates fell out of the top ten to No. 11.
On Saturday, all six NorCal teams currently in the top ten matchup: No. 9 Fresno at No. 2 Butte, No. 5 American River at No. 3 San Mateo, No. 8 San Francisco at No. 7 Modesto. Expect a shuffle in the poll next week.
This is the week that National and American Division teams crossover – only in the south.
On Saturday, we'll see No. 1 Riverside hosting No. 19 San Bernardino Valley, No. 4 Saddleback at 2-0 Pasadena (best record in the Pacific League), and No. 6 Mt. San Antonio entertaining No. 22 Chaffey (which has the state's longest win streak, 12 games). All are 2-0. No. 11 Ventura (0-1) tries to bounce back from its fall off the rankings top spot, hosting co-No. 19 Allan Hancock (which has the second-longest win streak at 10 games).
