Cypress College baseball alum Julian Aguiar makes MLB debut with Cincinnati Reds
TORONTO, ONTARIO (CANADA)- Cypress College is thrilled to announce that Julian Aguiar, a former standout pitcher for the Chargers, made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut as the starting pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, August 20. Aguiar played a key role in the Reds' 6-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, marking an impressive start to his big-league career.
Aguiar's debut is particularly significant for Cypress College, as he becomes the 26th alum from the Chargers Baseball Program to make an MLB appearance. In an exciting twist, Aguiar's debut was also a reunion of sorts, with two other Cypress alumni, Alon Leichman and Jeff Pickler, on the Reds coaching staff. The game also featured a matchup against former Charger Tommy Nance, who now plays for the Blue Jays.
Aguiar's journey to the majors began at Cypress College, where he pitched alongside fellow alum Troy Taylor during the 2021 season. Following his time at Cypress, Aguiar entered the 2021 MLB Draft, where he was selected by the Reds in the 12th round. His hard work, dedication, and perseverance have now culminated in his rise to the highest level of professional baseball.
Cypress College Baseball Head Coach Anthony Hutting shared his excitement for Aguiar's milestone, saying, "Congratulations to Julian on making his Major League debut. He is a great young man who has worked tirelessly to make his dream a reality. Our program is fortunate to be a small part of Julian's journey to the big leagues. Everyone at Cypress College is very proud of what Julian has accomplished, and we look forward to watching him live out his dream in professional baseball."
As Julian Aguiar begins his Major League career, his achievement serves as a powerful inspiration for current and future Cypress College student-athletes. His journey exemplifies the opportunities and pathways that the Chargers Baseball Program offers, demonstrating the potential for success at the highest levels of professional sports. Aguiar's accomplishment adds to the proud legacy of excellence that the program and its alumni have established over the years.
