Chabot's Olmos wraps up singles title and then captures doubles at CCCAA Women's Tennis Championships

WALNUT – Chabot College freshman Zoe Olmos pulled off a double titles win on Saturday at the CCCAA Women’s Tennis State Championships, as she won the singles title and with partner, Julie Santiago, took home the doubles title at Mt. San Antonio College.

Olmos also made history as the first woman to win a singles title for Chabot and the first doubles title team for the school to win since 2003.

Olmos and Santiago swept through the bracket and didn’t drop one set in the four matches, winning the title, 6-3, 6-3.

Finishing as runners-up in doubles was Nicole West and Kai Nikchevich, seeded No. 1 in the South

In the singles finals, Olmos, seeded No. 1 from the North, won in straight sets over West of Santa Monica College, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Previously, current Chabot assistant coach, Dmitry Dzyuba, won the only singles title for Chabot 19 years ago.

Olmos easily won her semifinal match, also in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 over No. 2 South, Anna Kynclova of L.A. Mission.

West also came into the finals with straight-set wins, defeating No. 2 North Makayla Chassion, 6-2, 6-2.

In the finals match against West, Olmos was tied 1-1 in games in the opening set, before reeling off three straight wins to take a 4-1 lead. She closed out the set winning two of the next four games for the 6-3 win.

The second set was a different story, as both players battled back and forth until Olmos took a 4-2 lead in games. However, West charged back and eventually tied the set, 6-6, and it went to a tiebreaker.

In the tiebreaker, West had a commanding, 4-1 lead, but Olmos was not to be denied the chance to give Chabot its first singles title. Olmos then won six of the next seven points to win, 7-5. That wrapped up the championship. 

“The hardest part of the match is closing it out,” Olmos said. “It’s so close to the end. It’s just mental and I had to regroup to be able to close it out in two sets. This was really fun and it was really exciting to know I was the first women’s champion (for Chabot).”

Chabot coach Rick Morris has seen both history-making singles titles in his 22 years at the school and was glad he could be a part of the current victory by Olmos.

“Maybe it was meant to be,” said Morris, who coached Dzyuba to the men’s singles title. “I coached Dmitry in 2003 and that year we actually won the state doubles too.

“When (Dzyuba) became my assistant coach, he started a junior academy and (Zoe) came up through the academy.”
