Orange Coast tops first Men's Volleyball State Rankings
(IRVINE) -- The first California Community College Men's Volleyball Coaches Association State Poll of 2025 features several usual suspects.
Orange Coast, which captured two state titles in a row and went 20-0 last season, is again No. 1.
The Pirates are 1-0 so far on the year, having swept Santa Barbara City, 25-18, 25-21, 25-18, at home last Friday. OCC hit .375 on the night and was paced by Noah Keelin, who had nine kills and hit .500.
Jacob Surette added six blocks and Jake Fukushima contributed 17 assists for OCC.
The No. 2 team in this first poll is the team that met Orange Coast in last year's state final – San Diego Mesa.
Mesa scored a record of 2-0 through last week's play. The Olympians defeated Long Beach City in its opener in four sets and then swept through Santa Monica on Friday at home, 25-11, 25-12, 25-14.
Mesa hit an impressive .500 (36-7-58) as a team and was led by our state highlighted player of the week – Trevor Clark, who finished with 11 kills on 17 attempts with no errors and added five digs in the win over SMC.
The third team in the state poll is off to one of the hottest starts. Golden West swept two opponents (Antelope Valley and LA Pierce).
Against Pierce last Friday, GWC hit .398 as a team and received 36 assists from John Braunstein. Kai Rodriguez hit .435 and had 12 kills and five digs for the Rustlers.
Fourth in the poll is another South Division and Orange Empire Conference team in Irvine Valley. The Lasers swept through Pierce at home and Antelope Valley on the road last week. Hitters Jack McGrew and Travis Kaufman and libero Cage Gonzalez have led IVC so far.
No. 5 in the poll is San Diego Miramar, which is also 2-0 on the year, having defeated Long Beach City at home in four sets and then sweeping Santa Monica on the road last Friday.
In the 25-16, 25-16, 25-20 sweep over the Corsairs, Miramar showed its depth with 10 players having at least one kill.
Moorpark, Santa Barbara City, Long Beach City, Fullerton and Palomar rounded out the top 10 in the first state poll of the season.

Student-Athlete of the Week--Trevor Clark, San Diego Mesa, sophomore outside hitter
Clark racked up 32 kills on 67 swings (.418) in a four-set win for the Olympians at Long Beach City last Wednesday. He also had 11 kills with zero errors on 17 swings (.647) at home against Santa Monica last Friday night. Clark is transitioning from the opposite position to outside hitter this season for Mesa. The 6-9 standout out of Temescal Canyon High helped San Diego Mesa win a conference title, make the 3C2A State Championship match last season and finish with a 21-5 record overall. Clark, who was named to the all-tournament team at the state event in 2024, recently committed to attend and play volleyball at NCAA Division I UC Irvine next year.
