SARATOGA, Calif. - It's not easy to create a dynasty in a sport still in its relative infancy in the California Community College Athletic Association but if third-seeded Grossmont College can repeat the state championship it won a year ago, then the Griffins just might qualify as one. They'll take the first step towards that goal on Friday when the 2017 CCCAA Women's Beach Volleyball Championships get underway at West Valley College.
The Griffins (22-4-1) are one of four teams that will compete for the title on Friday, joining top-seeded MiraCosta, second-seeded Feather River and four-seeded Long Beach. Three rounds of competition beginning at 10 a.m. will decide the state champion. Irvine Valley College won the inaugural title in 2015 while Grossmont kept it in the south with their state championship last year. Competition to determine the pairs champions will take place on Saturday and Sunday, as 32 teams representing the north and south take to the sand.
MiraCosta (20-2) and Grossmont went 1-2 in the Pacific Coast Conference this spring. The Spartans breezed to a 12-0 league record, delivering the Griffins their lone losses i the PCC. Feather River went a perfect 12-0 in the Coast Conference and is 16-3 overall while fourth-seeded Long Beach took third in the PCC with an 8-4 mark and enters the weekend 15-4.
