Delta's Irby, Cypress' Martinez earn 1st CCCWVCA State Players of the Week for 2023
San Joaquin Delta College's Kiyah Irby, an AVCA Second Team All-American in 2022, and Cypress College's Shayna Martinez, an All-Orange Empire Conference First Teamer as a freshman, started 2023 right where they left off a year ago in being named CCCWVCA State Players of the Week #1.
Irby, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from St. Mary's High, was the only freshman on last year's All-State NorCal Team, as she earned the Norcal Region POTW with her performance in two season-opening matches on Aug. 25. She ripped 15 kills, hitting .583 in a sweep over Hartnell, then scored 11 kills, 10 digs, two aces and two solo blocks in Delta's second sweep over Solano.
The sophomore has committed to NCAA Division I University of the Pacific.
Martinez, a 5-9 sophomore from Lakewood High, was seventh in the state in attack kills last year with 410 (Irby was sixth with 430). She took SoCal Region POTW honors in opening the new season scoring 18 kills, hitting .368, with 12 digs and two aces in a sweep over Mt. San Jacinto at the Pasadena City Quad. Martinez then helped the Chargers earn a 4-set win over host PCC by delivering 13 kills and adding two aces.
