Hanson named fifth women’s basketball coach in El Camino program history
TORRANCE - The El Camino College athletics program is pleased to announce the hiring of Megan Hanson as the new head coach of the Warriors’ women’s basketball program.
Hanson was officially hired in July as the fifth head coach in the history of the women’s basketball team since its inception in 1977-78.
"I feel incredibly blessed for this opportunity,” Hanson said. “I have a clear vision for what this program can become and my passion will be poured into every aspect of El Camino women’s basketball—fully representing their values on the court, in the classroom, and throughout the community.”
Hanson was most recently the associate head coach at Sage Hill School where she helped guide the team to a CIF-Division 1 Southern Section Regional Championship and advanced to the CIF State Tournament at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, Calif.
Hanson was also an assistant coach at Cypress College for three seasons where she sharpened her expertise in preparing teams for competition through scout team operations and in-depth opponent analysis. During this time, she also mentored student-athletes through every step of the matriculation process to four-year universities.
“I’m excited to bring these strengths in scouting, defense, and execution to El Camino and I’m committed to continuing to help many student-athletes successfully move on to the next level,” Hanson said.
A proud Cypress College alum, Hanson played under Margaret Mohr, whom she describes as the John Wooden of community college women’s basketball.
“I attribute my coaching philosophy to the wisdom and leadership of coach Mohr, whose influence continues to guide me as I strive to build a program grounded in the same core values: unity, accountability, enthusiasm, and an unwavering commitment to excellence—on the court, in the classroom, and within the community,” Hanson said.
Hanson played at Cypress College and was presented with the 2013–2014 CCCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award before transferring to UCLA where she received her bachelor of arts degree in psychology with a minor in applied developmental psychology in 2016.
Hanson would obtain her masters of science degree in school psychology from California Baptist University in 2020.
Off the court, Hanson serves as a school psychologist, using her deep knowledge of mental health, motivation, and resilience to elevate her students. She has a special passion for working with students with disabilities and is dedicated to helping them thrive in every aspect of their lives. Hanson is committed to building a strong presence in the South Bay and is eager to recruit talented student-athletes and inspire them to reach their full potential.
